Congratulations to Georgie and Alannah for their great effort to be selected for and to compete at the World Karate Championships. This tournament is currently the pinnacle of our competition and is a stepping stone towards the introduction of karate at the Junior Olympics 2018 and the Olympics in Tokyo 2020.
Georgie fought Switzerland in Round 1 in a very close match losing 2-3. Switzerland went on to win Silver so Georgie fought in repercharge losing to Germany (Georgie finished in 9th place overall).
Alannah fought USA in Round 1 in a cliffhanger match tying 0-0 with Alannah eventually losing in referee's decision. USA went on to win bronze but no repercharge for Alannah.
The close scores against quality opponents show the level which Georgie and Alannah have achieved this year. Well done girls! Preceding the competition, the National Team attended a 5day training camp in Madrid. The usual training day consisted of eating, training, pool recovery, eating, more training then more eating. Whilst exhausting, I think the experience of training with Australia's best and then competing against the world's best, plus just hanging out with the team, will cast a lasting memory.
Congratulations also to Sensei Sean who has qualified as WKF Referee A (the highest level).
As a coach, I am always excited to work with elite athletes and I hope to transfer my enthusiasm and knowledge to our karate kids at the dojo!

National Training and Selection Camp, Melbourne
May 2017
Five of our Seiha Club athletes were recently selected to attend the final national training & selection camp in Melbourne:
Kyle Schramm - Cadet -63kg
Georgie Lawrence - Cadet -47kg
Alannah Schramm - Junior -48kg
Jack Megraw - Junior -61kg
Charlie White- Cadet -52kg
Caleb Dooley - Junior -68kg (honorary member from Rockhampton)
Congratulations to all of these athletes for making it this far in the selection process. I hope you can appreciate the time, effort and resilience required to attain an international skill level. The athletes have been under intense pressure for the past 18 months which has culminated in the weekend training camp in Melbourne of 6 x 2hr sessions (that's more training than some do in a month!) It is disappointing and heart breaking when we strive and seemingly do not succeed, but we have to store up the lessons learnt and the accomplishments thus far in order to grow and be more prepared for the next challenge.
There can only be one representative for each division, so we congratulate Alannah and Georgie for making the final cut. They will compete in Tenerife, Spain on 26-29 October. I have also been selected as a National Coach to attend the event and Sensei Sean will attend as WKF Referee.
Most of the youngsters and oldsters in our dojo do not compete, however the karate spirit of each class is evident in every kick, punch and block performed. Whether you train with us for a short or long time, we appreciate the effort you put into your training. The effort and respect for your training contributes to the budo spirit of our dojo which can enrich your life and in turn, affect those around you.
