German Open 2011

24-25 September / 2011

Maki - German Open 2011

Congratulations to Tommy Hallam (Kumite) and Maki Kamada (Kata) for being selected to represent Australia at the German Open on 24-25 September 2011.

Tommy won his 1st round but was eliminated in the 2nd round by France. Maki went through the full 6 rounds in kata - she won four rounds to reach the semi-finals against Japan. Maki lost the semis but was then eligible for the 3rd place play-off against Germany which she won..... WELL DONE MAKI!! It is every competitor's goal to get on the podium but even with much training and commitment, the podium finish can be elusive.

We congratulate Tommy and Maki for their hard work and perseverance in achieving such great results. It is a privilege to have these two outstanding role models in our dojo for you to train with!

Success for Seiha Karate Competitors at National Karate Championships 2011

August / 2011

The 2011 National Karate championships were held in Caloundra in August. Seiha had 4 representatives in the Queensland team, a great result for a small club. National competition is a great way for karateka to challenge themselves against Australia's best and stimulates the ongoing development of advanced students.

Andres Rojas competed in the (Just) Over 35 years male kata and kumite. In the kata he narrowly missed out on 3rd place, and in the kumite he fought strongly against more experienced opposition. A great effort and learning experience for Andres which has lead to marked improvement through the season.

Katrina Lang competed in the Womens <68kg and Open weight kumite. Katrina fought strongly in some tight matches but was unable to progress through to the medal rounds.

Maki Kamada competed in the Womens Kata & Womens < 55kg kumite. She placed 3rd in both events, losing to Australia's current World Champion Kristina Mah. Consistently placing in both kata and kumite at this level is a great reflection of Maki's hard work and all-round ability.

Tommy Hallam competed in the Mens < 75 kg Kumite event where he won his 3rd National Title, and the Mens Open Kumite placing 3rd. A great result for Tommy and a reflection of his focus on the day.

Congratulations to both Tommy and Maki who at the conclusion of the tournament were both named in the Australian Karate Team to compete at the 2011 German Open. To make the National team is a great result and comes from years of hard work. We wish them both well on their journey towards International success.

The 2011 QLD Karate State Titles were held at Inala PCYC on 14-15 May. Seiha Karate had 5 competitors: Matt Miller, Andres Rojas, Tommy Hallam, Katrina Lang and Maki Kamada.

Andres Rojas won gold in the Men’s Kyu > 35yrs Kata which then qualified him to enter the blackbelt division. Andres continued his good form by also winning the Men’s Blackbelt > 35yrs Kata. This is an outstanding performance for a brown belt! Matt Miller also performed very well in the Kyu Kata and won his first round but missed out on a medal.

In the black belt divisions, Katrina Lang won the Women’s < 68kg Kumite with a convincing 8-0 score in the final. Tommy Hallam produced a very good kata to win bronze in the Men’s Open Kata and then silver in the < 75kg Kumite. The outstanding performer for the weekend was Maki Kamada who won triple gold in the Women’s Open Kata, < 55kg Kumite and Open Kumite.

Congratulations to all the competitors as the results are testament to their effort and perseverance. The medalists qualify for the Australian Championships which will be held in Caloundra on 5-7 August 2011.

Seiha karate hosted Kristina Mah, World Karate Champion, for 2 seminars on Saturday March 12

Kristina is a superb karateka with a long list of successes at the Australian level in both kata and kumite. In 2010 her years of hard work (she has been training since age 7!) paid off when she was triumphant in the Womens < 62 kg kumite at the 2010 WKF World Karate Championships in Serbia, becoming Australia’s 3rd ever world champion. Sensei Robyn, who well knows the effort required to get such a result having won 3 medals at that level, was thrilled at her success and we were so excited to be able to invite her up to Brisbane to train at our club

She conducted 2 excellent sessions – the first at Seiha Honbu for club members and the second open session at Sommerville House. All those who attended gained an experience to remember - a great opportunity to train ‘up close and personal’ with an elite martial artist. The training over, we were able to then enjoy the other great reason to get her up – a night out at The Gunshop to toast her success, enjoy some fine food and show Kristina some of the nightlife of Brisbane. Sensei Robyn was heard to say “you cant have a better day than that….2 training sessions with a World Champ and talking karate with great people over fine food…..”
