The 2012 Australian Open Karate Championships was held in Sydney in April. This is one of the 2 major domestic selection tournaments for the year. Seiha had 2 athletes competing who both medalled, a great achievement.
Tommy Hallam competed in the Mens < 75 kg Kumite and was disappointed to lose a close semi-final after defeating a talented New Caledonian in the early rounds, he went on to win his match for bronze. Tommy had a chance to make amends in the Mens Open - the best fighters from all categories competing - and he did just that. After winning through the elimination rounds he defeated the heavyweight champion in the final to win his first National Openweight championships, a great result for Tommy.
Maki Kamada competed in the Womens Open Kata, a strong division with more than 30 competitors. Maki went down 3-2 in the semi-final to best of 2 visiting Japanese competitors. Maki went on to take 3rd , another solid result and a great learning experience on her path to successfully competing at the World Championship level.
On April 15 2012 Seiha Karate was honoured to host Antonio Oliva for a seminar. He is known as the 'coach of coaches' having coached numerous national teams to World Championship success over the last 30 years.
Sensei Oliva was instrumental in the development of Australian Sports karate and much of our success in the 1990's was a direct result of his efforts. He has such a deep understanding of tactical karate and it was such a pleasure for Sensei Robyn and Sean to train again under someone who has been a major influence on the development of their karate. Insightful, funny, and brutally frank.....who could ask for more? A great opportunity to train with a genuine master.
The Qld Summer Championships were held over the weekend of 17-18 March. Seiha has some great results with Maki Kamada 1st Open Female Kata & 1st Female Kumite < 55kg, Matthew Miller 1st Veteran Kyu grade kata, Andreea Ifteni 1st kyu female kata, and Tommy Hallam 1st Male Kumite < 75 kg.
"Maki Kamada wins Gold in female kata at the Sydney International with Silver to Victoria(left), bronze to Italy(middle).
